Hello hello!

As you can see, our P-Day was changed to today because of some zone leader conference going on in Edinburgh. So that's why you are getting the emails today. But I just want you all to know - I love reading your emails so much! I wish I had more time to make longer replys but know that I print them out and you can usually find me smiling and even laughing out loud when I'm reading about your weeks and what you have to say. I absolutely love it.

I can't believe tomorrow is Halloween; that is so crazy! Halloween is celebrated over here, but it's not as big. And on top of that, here in Irvine the parents don't let their children go out trick or treating for safety reasons so we probably won't see very many little ones running around which is sad. We're not allowed to be out on Halloween night as well, so we have planned to stay in a member's home and do some service for them. I'm kind of bummed we won't be able to see little kiddos running around in cute costumes. I hope all of you have fun tomorrow night!

This upcoming week will be busy because we are having another sister exchange! I'll be shipped off to Pollock, Scotland with Sister P.. I've met her already and she's really cute/fun so I'm excited. Actually, all of the sisters that I have met in our mission are really cute, fun girls so I'm really not even worried about what companions I could have in the future! We have some amazing girls here. I guess with this sister exchange, I have mixed feelings though. We're really in the swing of things right now and I'll be gone for 2 days this time and I'll be missing all of the appointments we have set in those 2 days so I'm kind of bummed! I feel like I'm going to get behind on how everyone's doing that we are teaching/meeting with. Kind of the feeling of having to catch up on homework or something. I don't want to miss out! But it will be fun to live the life of the Pollock sisters for a couple of days and see what it's like for them.

Anyways, this past week has been good! We've focused on teaching the Restoration to Helen (30's) and her son Shawn (10) and that's been going well. Shawn has the most amazing questions and insights- it just blows my mind. I was no where near his intelligence at 10 years old. Haha. I love those two so much. Our visits with them are always fun.

We are working on teaching 3 investigators right now. They're all in the beginning wood works so nothing too much to report yet. It's just difficult teaching men because we always have to find a female to come with us for those lessons! Luckily, our friend from the ward who's leaving for her mission in a couple of months has just finished up with school, she has been coming out a lot with us for lessons. We kind of have a little trio friendship going on. It's a lot of fun. Her name's Iona and she is a solid girl. Her parents are separated, her mom isn't a member, and her dad is less active and she is just a solid rock in the gospel and she's always happy/cheerful/helpful with the ward. We can just see how much she strengthens the ward. She amazes me. So she's been with us a lot since we are working with a lot of men right now. She'll be serving in Burmingham, England starting in January!

I'm really growing attached to Irvine and its people and ward. Before I was thinking it would be really fun to transfer somewhere else, but now I'm getting quite comfortable and settled in so I wouldn't mind staying here for a bit! Transfer calls are coming around Nov 19th. Chances are that Sister T. will be transferring somewhere else because she has been in this area for almost 6 months now. And chances are I will be staying because I've only been here for a few months. It sounds like everyone stays in each area for about 6 months on average, sometimes 9. But who knows, anything can happen!

I love the work. I love teaching people the good news that the gospel brings! It's always such a great opportunity to help people understand the reality of God being our loving Heavenly Father, the plan He has for us, and the chance we have to repent of all mistakes because of Christ's suffering for us. They are simple doctrines to us, but to these people, it's a life changing factor and my testimony of the gospel is growing so much- especially of the simple, but powerful truths that we all know. We are so blessed to have been raised in the gospel. I love sharing it with those here in Irvine who are willing to listen. It's good stuff!

My Family!!

How is everyone? I am doing well right now. This past week has been a really good week- busy busy. We were up in Edinburgh with the other missionaries in our mission for some special training and we had a lot of other meetings this week so it's been a different kind of week- but good. Because we haven't had the same amount of proselyting time, Sister T. and I had to powerhouse the last few days of the week to reach our goals, but we were able to do it for the most part!

A couple of things first- We haven't been able to reach Jon this week. His phone keeps going straight to answering machine. Not good. I really really hope it's just a phone problem or that he's busy. Our worst nightmare will be if he has blocked our number from calling him for some reason. I would be so disappointed/surprised because he is SOLID and doing so well. We'll try and catch him this week. We saw Yvonne in town this week. She had a broken nose and her nose was bleeding so bad because she had another epileptic attack ( I don't know if I ever told you she has epilepsy?), but this time it happened in McDonald's and she hit hard. The poor lady. We really feel for her. She still doesn't want to be taught anymore but we are getting her to come to 'Sewing Sisters' with the Relief Society every 2 weeks so at least that will get her foot back in the door! Just in case down the road she becomes more fully prepared for the gospel. It will be good to have the support of the Relief Society and be around their positive and spiritual influences. I tell ya- working with investigators does not go as smooth sailing as I imagined it would!

Last night was a fun night for us. The other day we had pulled out our ward list and said a prayer to come across a name of someone who is in need. We came across 3 names that we decided we would go by and visit- all people who have fallen away from the church. Last night we went by one of those names we had chosen and it was a really neat experience. We knocked on the door and Helen (late 30's) answered and she took us right in. She was so excited to see us and we were in the process of taking our coats off and sitting down when she just goes 'I want to come back to church! I haven't been in 10 years. I want to stop smoking. I want to fix my life. I need your help, though. Can you help me?' It was the most amazing thing because I know it wasn't coincidence that we came across her name and chose to go and see her. The Lord directed us to her. She kept on saying how she couldn't believe that we were actually there and saying how much she was looking for help and needs the church again in her life. She has a ten year old son, Shawn, who is not a member of the church and he sat in on our lesson as well. We gave him a book of mormon and he said he is going to start reading it! (He's brilliant too. That boy knows more history than I do. So I think he will really enjoy reading the Book of Mormon. He's really intelligent.) He wants to come to church and we have another appointment to come and teach him and his mom. They are both so cute! We all connected really well and we have some good stuff ahead of us- helping Helen quit smoking, coming back to church, and teaching Shawn the lessons so he can be baptized, is our hope!

We really see amazing things happen out here as we heavily include the Lord in the work. He knows who's prepared and it's exciting when we are placed in front of someone who needs the gospel. It was a great week. I'm really happy and Sister T. and I are doing very well. Making your companion your friend is such an important thing I am realizing. We are doing well!

Mom's Birthday

Well, Happy Birthday to Mom today. Days like this can be pretty tender huh? I really miss her! Sometimes in my prayers I will add 'And if possible, please let my mom know how much I love her and miss her.' I know it doesn't say anywhere doctrinally that Heavenly Father can relay messages, but I like to think He can, and if not, at least he is hearing from me how much I love her. It sounds like you're getting together tonight for an FHE/Birthday dinner to honor her- sounds like it will be a good night! I wish I could be there.

Okay, as for this week, a lot of weird things happened to us. Haha. I got attacked by a member's cat. I now have a left arm that is completely scratched up and I have about 5 holes in that arm (Yes, holes, haha the cat dug its claws into my arm so Sis. T. had to help me pry the claws out of my arm!) So painful. But funny now. The cat was upset because it was sitting on my lap and it adjusted itself, which made my skirt rise up so I tried to move the cat to fix the problem and that's when it went haywire. Haha. I tried to just be laughy about it so Sis. Anderson didn't feel too bad. Quite the experience. Also this week, we have been helping a lady with packing her home because she is moving, and one of the times her dog got out so we had to chase after her dog. We were running after that dog, full sprint, in skirts, for about 2 miles before we were able to catch it. People on the streets were stopping and trying to help us and everything. It was quite the scene. The things that happen on missions....

So Jon is doing really well! We have taught him about 5/6 times. The lesson following the Plan of Salvation, he told us that he had done as we asked and he prayed to know if what we had taught him about the Plan of Salvation is true, he said he did that and that the doubts he was having about it left!! Ahh best feeling in the world as a missionary. And then on Monday, we encouraged him to be reading at least one chapter a day from the Book of Mormon, when we met with him a few days later, he said he was already through 2nd Nephi! He's cruisin'! He told us that he doesn't even feel a need to pray to know if the Book of Mormon is true because it just makes sense and he was saying how the prophecies match up perfectly with what's happening on the news, etc. So I guess that's good in a sense, but we still want him to pray about it, so he can receive that confirmation for himself. He also said that since reading the Book of Mormon, his doubts about Joseph Smith have left. Amazing. The Lord is wiping away his doubts, slowly but surely. It's so exciting. Our only obstacle with him right now is he keeps bailing on church. He says he freaks out every time and doesn't end up coming. We've offered to meet him somewhere to go with him or to have a member pick him but he's not comfortable with that either. So we're trying to figure out what to do to help be comfortable coming to church. But aside from that, he's reading, he's praying and continually progressing!

One of our appointments this week was with a lady named Libby Carlisle and she fell away from the church a few years ago. We've been meeting with her once a week, ever since I got here and there wasn't really any signs of improvement. BUT, last week we dropped by and shared a message about trusting in the Lord and building a foundation on Christ and after the message we were quiet for just a little bit (We try to include more silences in our lessons so the spirit can work on them and they can gather their thoughts) Anyways, we stayed queit for just a minute and then she goes 'I need to get back to church.' We were shocked/excited!! So she came back to church yesterday for the first time in years! Ahh another one of those moments that is the absolute BEST feeling.

So one thing we get asked a lot out in the street is how there could be a God with so much suffering in the world. We get that on a daily basis. People have a hard time believing there can be a God when everyone has such hard trials in their lives. But we know, that there must be an opposition in all things and we need to experience these hardships in order for us to grow and progress in this life. We wouldn't be able to become more like Him without experiencing mortality- where there is suffering that we learn how to endure, and become better because of it. 'He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world, for He loveth the wrold..' (2 Ne 26:24)

I know that when we put our trust in the Lord at all times- especially the hard- that He will lift us and help us in our times of need. I really experienced this fully the year that Mom was battling cancer and then when she passed. It was the hardest time of our lives, but also the most spiritual time in my life. I've never felt more close to the spirit and to Heavenly Father than I did during that time as I poured out my heart to Him fervently every day, read the Book of Mormon more meaningfully, and learned how to submit to His will and see the bigger picture of what will happen and that we will see her again. It's really when I realized just how much each of us need the Savior in our lives- to strengthen us and make us whole. 'And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage, adn this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.' (Mosiah 14:14)

I love you all. I know days like this can be hard. But I know the Lord is mindful of us and strengthens us as we submit to His will and as we trust that through Christ, 'He will ease the burdens which are put upon our shoulders.'

Love you guys. I'm sure you'll be going to put flowers on Mom's grave today, so I hope that goes well.

As for things that I can think of that I would want:

• Earrings/Necklaces - I only have one pair of earrings and it's getting old. I wish I would've brought more! It's pretty lenient as far as what kind of jewlery is allowed- just probably not the long dangly, huge necklaces. If you have any confusions, you can search dress and grooming for missionaries on lds.org and it will show pictures of what kind of jewlery is allowed!
• My Black Skinny Jeans - This is my biggest regret of what I didn't bring! Every P-Day I am wishing I brought them because they are my most comfortable pair. I would be so happy if you were able to send these. They are in a box to the left of my bed labeled 'Jeans' and they are the only black skinny jeans in the box.
• Insoles for my boots- My shoes are incredible. But my boots could use some support/comfort that I think insoles would solve! (Size 8 1/2 - 9)
• Plan of Salvation Pictures- It would really help in lessons to have plan of salvation cut outs that show kind of the map of how the plan is laid out. Maybe they sell them at the distribution center or something?
• White Honda Civic '08
• 5 x 7 Pictures of Christ- I want to be able to give people gifts like a framed picture of Christ, but we obviously don't have LDS stores out here, so if you could send me the pictures, then I can buy the frames out here and give them as little gifts to people who don't have a picture of Christ in their homes.
• EFY Style Music- Robyn is amazing and sent me Mormon Tabernacle Choir music, From Cumorah's Hill music, so I am good there! Thank you Robyn! But if any of you see EFY syle music on sale somewhere, I would love to have some.

So there you go. If you can't send these, I will survive. They aren't needs. I would just be happy with a 'Happy Birthday' from you!

Girls can leave at 19 now?!?

Well, I am still in shock from President Monson's annoucement on Saturday about the new ages of missionaries! 19 years old for girls and 18 years old for boys! How exciting! I can't decide if I am more excited or ticked off, though. I can't believe I JUST MISSED the new change by a couple of years! I would've loved to have gone at 19 and been home by 20 1/2. Haha. Oh well. If it was part of God's plan for me to go at 19, it would've happened. But this new change will bring about a lot of good! I am really excited about it. It's really going to increase the amount of missionaries coming out- especially girls. So many girls will be coming out now with the age drop. I just picture this flood of girls coming out and I get so excited! I need more girls and boys out here badly. Being out here has really shown me how much work there is to do. In the MTC, we learned that the world population is at 7 billion, with 56,000 missionaries, so that comes to 125,000 peopel needing conversion per missionary. There is quite a bit of work to do! I'm excited for the influx of sister missionaries we will be having, and it will be good for boys to get out here at 18, instead of waiting that awkward year until 19. It's all around a really good thing. Exciting stuff!

Wasn't conference amazing? I didn't get to watch Sunday PM, but we got to watch everything else. I love conference so much becuase I always come away feeling like a new person with new resolutions on things I want to improve on. Overall, a theme that kept striking me was all of the talks about how we need to be feeding the Lord's sheep and showing Christ we love Him by our actions in helping others and how many people there are in the world who are in need of the gospel and being anxiously engaged. Like in M. Russell Ballard's talk when he said we are like bees in a beehive 'Great things are brought about by many hands that are anxiously engaged in a good cause.' All of that combined with a new age of missioanries is making for an exciting time! I can feel the vibes! I know that the Lord loves all of this children and desires for all of his children to have the chance to return to live with Him by receving the ordinances of the gospel and so it's so great to see the efforts in sending out more girls and boys to preach the good news to everyone!

Okay, as for my week- it was a good one. We taught Jon the Plan of Salvation in a member's home and it went so well! The spirit was strong and he really enjoyed hearing about God's plan for us and how it will work in the next life. He is reading more on mormon.org and he said he had watched a 'mormon seminar' last week. Turns out he had watched the Relief Soceity Broadcast. Haha. Good for him! We are meeting with him again today. We're hoping he was able to tune in to conference because what better way to feel of the spirit than to listen to the prophet himself! I'll keep you posted. He was really blown away at how kind Sister Shannon was for letting us come in her home. He said he doesn't see civility like that anymore. I told him how in the church, we take care of each other like we are one big family- because we are. We love each other and serve each other. That is one thing that seems to first draw people's attention to the church is the friendliness and kindess and it makes them want to learn more about us and then they can come to know the truthfulness of the gospel for themselves. It's all so good.

One fun thing that happened last week- we were walking along and 2 younger guys came and asked us where the nearest key store is. We told them and then they asked 'Are you twos Mormon by chance?' and we said yes and Sister T. asked 'Sooo was it our name tags or longer skirts that gave that away?' and one of them replied 'Eh, actually our boss is Mormon and you two have the same kind of brightness about you that he has, so we were just wondering if you were Mormons too.' ... Isn't that amazing! It might not seem like it to us, but we all of that brightness and I know we can be examples to others in bringing them to the truth.

Transfers are happening right now. A lot of change is happening within the zone, but Sister T. and I are staying the same, and in the same area. Clearly we are supposed to be here, so we're aiming to find out why it is that we are needed in this town still. It's amazing how all of the call moves are done by inspiration to President Brown. I'm happy to be staying though, I love the people here and i would've been sad to leave them!! We have a new ward mission leader too- he's young! He just got off his mission a month ago so that will be different. I've never heard of that, but it should be good. He still has the mission fire and has a lot of experience so it will help.

Hi everyone,

Sorry about the scare last week! I'm fine. Monday was a holiday so we couldn't use the library's computers and so on Tuesday was when we emailed but then I found out today that the email didn't send correctly. Struggles.

This week has been interesting. A few big things to report-

1. Yvonne. We have sadly decided to not continue with Yvonne. The past couple of weeks she has slipped back to her old habits, has stopped coming to church, and has no more desire with anyting about the church. It broke our hearts. But on top of that, we have learned that she is extremely unstable- we're talking bi polar. So we were feeling pretty uncomfortable in her home because she tends to throw objects when she gets really angry and so our last lesson we had with her, we had our ward mission leader come with us because he wanted to. Well, after the lesson, he told us it's up to us but that if we were his daughters he would forbid us from going back into her home because of the state she is in. We had been feeling the same way recently so we have stopped working with Yvonne. I feel so bad for her. Her life is in shambles and the gospel would have blessed her with comfort and peace. We dropped by a birhtday card for her yesterday and we continue to pray for her.
2. Jon. Jon is our new investigator! We met him about a week and half ago and he gave us his phone number. We called him and he didn't answer but this week, we realized we hadn't tried calling him again so I called him to see if we could meet with him and he said yes and he said he was available to meet right then! So we met him by ASDA (Knock off of Walmart) and taught him. He said he had read the Restoration Pamplet we had given him so that was good to hear. We have now met with him twice. He's in his mid 20's- late 20's, really nice, and the type of person to just love learning about all religions. He grew up in a home where his Mom was Catholic and his Dad was Protestant so there was a lot of religious conflict within the home and so he's always just interested to hear about what people believe. He asked US if he could come to church with us on Sunday. I loved that; we were planning on inviting him at the end of the lesson but he asked us during it! He's really receptive, respectful, and is full of questions. We love it. Unfortunately, he didn't show up to church yesterday; we were so bummed! But last night he texted us and said, 'I'm sorry I never attended church today. I could give you a thousand different excuses, but I feel I at least owe you the truth. Like all my worst decisions, it stemmed from cowardice, I would undestand if you wouldn't want to see me again- Jon' So I of course called him right back and told him we understand and of course want to continue meeting with him!!! So he's coming to our Tuesday night FHE we have with investigators/less actives/recent converts each week. We're taking the bus with him so he'll feel more comfortable coming! I'm excited about him :) He seems to be really searching for truth and trying to decide what he believes. He told us that one thing he likes about our lessons is that we can apply ancient scritpure to our day and to each of us. He said he's been having a hard time seeing how ancient scripture can really help us. So I'm glad we were able to help him see that. It really is amazing how everything the prophets have written are for US, in THIS day and age, and it provides instruction for our lives and really does bring happiness and answers to life's questions! So
3. Pancake Night. We planned a fun activity for last Friday! It was a huge hit. We put together a pancake night, played games, and watched gospel videos on a projector screen. We coordinated it with the elders and our ward mission leader- it was a HUGE HIT! I was so happy with how it went and that everyone was willing and wanting to help plan it! We invited all of our investigators, less actives, recent converts, and some members. It was such a great night. We want to continue doing some sort of family fun night once a month. I attached a picture of some of the people who came! (I unfortunatley didn't think to take a picture till later)

So those were some things that happened this week! Other small bits- I tried lamb for my first time. Wasn't horrible. Didn't love it, but I would eat it again. Last night I made lasagne for our Sunday dinner and I caught the oven mit on fire from the stove! What is my deal?! That is twice this year!! First my shirt catching on fire and now the oven mit! At least this time, I didn't have to stop, drop, and roll, I just had to race over to the sink to put it under cold water haha. Goodness.

The work is moving forward! There are many ups and downs, but I know that the Lord is mindful of his people, and if we put our faith in him, and work hard then we will start to see miracles.

Oh, and I AM SO EXCITED FOR CONFERENCE!!! I have been so excited for it the past few weeks. Can't belive it's here! YAY! I feel like it's Christmas. Haha.

Hello hello!

So sorry about not sending an email yesterday. It was Scotland's Bank Holiday so everything is closed so they told us we would have to email today and we don't have very much time so I will have to type like a maniac.

I got the package!!! Thank you so much! I was so so giddy! One of the pictures attached is of the day I got it. I was so happy :) And so shocked you were able to get me a mini preach my gospel?! What on earth? I thought they were on back order? At District Meeting today, you had everyone drooling over my pocket sized Preach My Gospel. They want me to ask you how you were able to get it? I'm not surprised you were able to. Thank you so much Dad & Robyn!!

It's been a crazy week! But I'm sure I could be saying that at the beginning of all of my emails haha. You know missionary work is hard when I find myself enjoying cleaning the flat and doing wash/ironing/etc. Haha. It's so calming. But I'm loving the work out here. We are having so many great experiences and meeting some really great people.

So in response to most of your questions, yes, it is getting cold here. SO cold. And everyone keeps saying that winter hasn't hit yet and I keep wondering how it could be humanly possible to be any colder!! Haha but tights and boots and scarfs are becoming my best friends. I was able to get a coat last week that this really sweet couple paid for me, but I just found out that it's not totally water proof so I don't know if it will last me. I may have to go out shopping again!

But anyways, the Scottish people are seriously my favorite. It's never a dull moment with them. They are full of character and most of the time we are finding ourselves trying to pry ourselves away from appointments because they LOVE to chat. It's really difficult to get people to listen to us in the streets, but we find our ways. What I like to do is when we're on the bus or standing around at places, I will just start talking to people casually and 99% of the time, within a minute, they will ask me if I am over here on holiday (vacation) because they hear my accent. Then I've got them and I can get into the gospel. Or, if I talk casually with them for a little bit, then they will ask me about my badge and what religion I am, and then because THEY were the ones that asked, they always listen to what I have to say, because they probably feel obligated since they were the ones that brought it up. Haha. I just find it to be more successful when I talk to people casually before getting into the gospel. Obviously it doesn't work in every situation, like when we're chapping on doors or street contacting, but that's what I like to do. Sometimes people will say things like, 'Ya know Darlin', you're actually a pretty normal person' . I've gotten that a few times just by chatting with people first. Haha. I think it's good for them to see that we are just like everyone else! We just have a message to share with them! (By the way- I get called Darlin'/ Lassie/ Love by men and women of all ages haha it's funny. Darlin' is what it is most of the time.

Another thing we like to do is go finding by the harbor side, because we have found that people who are there usually go there to think and ponder. We call them harbor side ponderers, so we like to go there and talk to those people about God's plan for them and the purpose of life and we get success that way because usually they look deep in thought anyways and are more willing to listen. We have to get creative out here. Haha.

I really like Irvine (pronounced Er-vin) a lot! During the day anyways. After dark, it's a pretty shady place. But I guess most places are! I actually just found out that Irvine has just reopened for sisters to cover. It's been closed to sisters for several years because of how dangerous it can get. But I'm pretty sure they will allow it to continue to stay open because we haven't had any really serious problems. We do deal with drunk men and harassing teenagers, but I'm sure all of the areas of the world have that after dark! So my guess is that they will continue to allow sisters to come out here. I like it a lot.

So the work is coming along. We have a few potentials in the works that we're excited about. Yvonne is going through some struggles right now. Dad told me to be aware that Satan will plant a seed of doubt in people's minds as they prepare for baptism and we are definitely experiencing that right now. We're going by to see her on her birthday this week and get a feel for what's happening and how she's feeling. I'll keep you updated. We've changed her baptism date to October 14th.

It's amazing how much I have come to love these people in such a short amount of time. They have such hard things happen in their lives and I find myself constantly thinking about them throughout the day. I'm so grateful for the gospel that we have and the peace it brings in our lives. I want so badly for these people to understand the doctrines of the gospel so they can see how it will better their lives. They are great people out here.
